Category I - Design of Professional Education (Standards 1.A through 1.I)
Evaluations, changes, and improvements under Category I standards during this year:
All licensure programs were under review at the Ohio Department of Education in anticipation of the new Ohio licensure requirements. Over sixty programs were submitted in January 1998 to the Ohio Department of Education. We were successful in gaining approval to begin offering all programs submitted on Sept. 1, 1998. Programs were revised to meet learned society guidelines.
Early 1998 also saw beginning of the planning process to sunset the old certification programs by 2002. Students beginning their programs in the Fall of 1998 were able to enter the new licensure programs.
Received WSU Faculty Senate, WSU Board of Trustee and Ohio Board of Regents approval to begin offering the B.S. Ed. Degree in Early Childhood Education and Middle Childhood Education.

The College continued its efforts to recruit underrepresented students. The Student Fact Book, Fall 1998 indicates the following data compared to the start of the decade and mid-decade:

Over the last few years the College received a number of grants focusing on recruitment of underserved populations including grants with a focus on diversity:

Diversified Teaching Force (96-00) Greg Bernhardt, sponsored by Ohio Department of Education
Developing Future Teachers and Students Taking Action to Succeed (95-00) Stephen Fortson, sponsored by U.S. Department of Education and Ohio Department of Education
Dewitt Wallace-Readers Incentive Award in Teacher Education Programs (97-00) Donna Cole, Jim Tomlin, sponsored by the National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER)
The College revised its mission statement and belief system during the 1997-1998 academic year. Two of the beliefs refer directly to diversity . We believe diversity is essential to achieve our goals and We believe a community of learners cherishes intellectual freedom, diversity, and debate.
During the annual campus’ Martin Luther King celebration, the College annually sponsors the Brotherhood Reception.

Category III - Professional Education Faculty (Standards III.A through III.D)
Evaluations, changes, and improvements under Category III standards during this year:
College of Education and Human Services faculty were selected for three of the four University Presidential Awards for Faculty Excellence, Service, Scholarship, and All Around Faculty.
Increased external funding from $931,000 to $1,281,000.

Category IV - The Unit for Professional Education (Standards IV.A through IV.C)
Evaluations, changes, and improvements under Category IV standards during this year:
Increased both headcount and student credit hour production over 1996-1997.
Increased to 40, the number of complete tuition fellowships available to CEHS graduate students.
Office of Field Experiences placed over 1,280 students during the 97-98 academic year.
More than 4,700 professionals were enrolled in over 250 graduate professional development workshops.

Additional Changes in the Unit:
Completed a partnership agreement between the Dayton Public Schools and the College of Education and Human Services.
The Office of Student Services processed almost 24,000 phone calls, handled almost 4,000 individual advisement sessions, and admitted 1,288 students to the college in 1997-1998.
